Meet the team ascending Snowdon for Westcoast's Charity of the Year 2022, Cancer Research UK

Published date: 16 August 2022

Back to insights

Fundraising is well under way at Westcoast, for our 2022 chosen charity of the year, Cancer Research UK. Later this month some of our fabulous employees will be trekking Snowdon raising money for this worthy cause.

Here's what some of the team had to say:

I am really looking forward to this Snowdon climb and feel very proud to say we are dedicating it specifically to my mum who sadly lost her battle with cancer in 2019. I’m a keen hiker / climber so feel confident I can get the job done! Training is well under way and I’m hopefully for some great weather / views at the top - Nick Canes

We are doing this event in memory of Nick’s Mum who we sadly lost 5 years ago. We want to demonstrate unity and support for each other and anyone else who is suffering in relation to the illness. It is also an opportunity to bond as a collective and support each other throughout the challenge. We have a range of fitness levels so it will likely be that encouragement and support will be a key driver to completion.

We are a little cautious and sceptical. It is a first for many of us and we really don’t know what to expect. But we are looking forward to the day and embracing whatever it throws at us. Some of us have trained for it, others believe they are already equipped, and some I believe will be in their gyms on step machines frantically over the next three weeks - Stephen Sinclair

With a range of ages and fitness levels, this is a challenge for all and we're all working hard to make sure we are fighting fit for the climb. I’m very excited to complete this challenge and it makes it even more special to be doing it for a cause close to the team’s heart, I will be taking this on in memory of my friend Emmy, who lost her battle with cancer in 2017. Even though I consider myself to be fairly fit, I’m still slightly nervous as not sure what we are up against! - Lauren Ilsley

Like most of us, I have been touched in some way by cancer. I’ve lost family members and seen loved ones survive, but only after rounds of intensive and invasive treatment. Anything I can do to raise money to help fund research to find a cure or alternative less, debilitating treatments is the least I can do. I’m fortunate to be healthy enough to undertake such an exciting adventure, unlike those suffering from this dreadful illness, so why wouldn’t I take part in this challenge? Not only will it be a personal achievement for me, I would’ve done it in memory of those who lost their battle with cancer, those that showed it who’s boss and in support of those people trying to kick it’s arse!

I'm really excited [about the challenge] and under prepared!! Think I better invest in some good boots and some plasters!!Hoping that life as a full time worker, mum of 2, netball player and ‘pole fitness’ beginner will be enough to get me to the top (and back down again) - Diane Wilkins

Good luck to everyone taking part!

So please dig deep if you can, and TOGETHER, WE WILL BEAT CANCER.
