Recycling Week at Westcoast: building sustainability into everyday

Published date: 17 October 2023

Back to insights

It’s recycle week! At Westcoast, we build sustainability into our everyday – and in 2022 we recycled 532 tonnes of paper and 53 tonnes of plastic waste!

Andrea Bowyer, Sustainability Lead at Westcoast said, “In an effort to both decrease landfill and our carbon footprint, we reduce the use of resources where possible, reuse materials when we can, and recycle those items that cannot be used again.”

In our own warehouses, we’ve worked to make our operations as sustainable as possible. We have reduced or eliminated plastic waste through measures such as:

  • Purchasing 30% recycled material cardboard boxes
  • Replacing the polythene air bags with paper voids
  • Using paper tape over plastic cello tape
  • Utilising paper dock wallets
  • Swapping from plastic to paper padded bags and envelopes

  • The focus of recycle week this year is ‘The Big Recycling Hunt’ which focuses on ‘missed capture’: the items that can be recycled but are commonly missed.

E-waste is the biggest growing waste sector, but often it is possible to reuse and repurpose or recycle these items. At present, 50 million tons of e-waste is generated each year, and it is estimated that by 2030 this figure will grow to 75 million tons! Westcoast supports partners in repurposing and recycling legacy IT equipment via Westcoast Asset Management (WAM), part of the Westcoast Group, and through collaboration with IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) services.
